Creative Child Photography
I’ve always loved fashion, and kids bring a certain untethered energy that I love so it’s easy to work with them - in my opinion. One of my passions is creating a set with beautiful backdrops, flowers, the right lighting and let the kids play …. And they do play, even the more timid ones. I had 7 little girls come into my studio the other day and it was so exhilarating watching them play, but also very in tuned to my direction. They listened and executed. As a photographer with a vision, that’s the best scenario - so much that we finished way ahead of schedule and even enough time where I let the girls direct shots. And those came out great!
My approach to working with kids…well, kids are smart. If you’re organized, they notice. If you’re confident and direct with a fun, but assured way, they respond. I direct them with the most clear and simple explanations. However, as I type this, adults alike respond to this too. Directing a photoshoot can be daunting when you’re not prepared so I say preparation is key because you never know what’s going to happen on the big day. I spent time researching poses, figuring out the props and how I could use those for the models. As a photographer, there are so many variables into making an image look the best it can be, and working with young kids - you honestly have to be fully present with them. I do adjust lighting, a little, but mostly I’m playing along with the kids.
On this particular shoot I had a stylist working with me, and she was great! She also got to play with what she loved best, clothes and accessorizing and making magic and beauty. We had an idea for one of the little models, but didn’t test the shirt before hand, and the top was too small (but the stylist quickly made adjustments). I was on the shooting floor and when this little model came down in a completely different look - she looked amazing! Even better than we originally planned.
I think this shoot was particularly successful because after all our preparation, we let the day naturally unfold. Like life I’d say, there’s only so much you can control and the rest, we just need to play along.
I embrace the vibrant energy that children bring to photography sessions. Recently, I had the pleasure of working with a group of seven young girls, and their ability to engage with the set and respond to direction was truly exhilarating. By combining artistic backdrops, thoughtful lighting, and the natural spontaneity of play, we create an environment where children’s personalities shine. This approach not only enriches the experience for families but also allows us to capture authentic moments that resonate for years to come. #LifestylePhotography #ChildrensPhotography #CreativeProcess #AuthenticMoments #FamilyMemories
