Creative Family Photography NYC

It’s been a few years now that I’ve started to freelance into the family and child photography world, and I was diligent about my research - reading and resourcing images that I liked and how I could implement them into my own sessions, but what I found the most engaging and most interesting to me, and the most successful images is when I let my, and my clients, imagination take over and we start to play. 

I named my photography creating playtime, not to be witty or different, but truly because Jessica Johnston…in various forms is already taken! To Jess photography to Jessica Johnson photography to Jessi photography, I’ve looked. Even Jessica Robyn Photography (which is my middle name) so, in the beginning I really wanted to just work with kids and the feeling of creating a playful atmosphere was really my intention to bringing fun and joy into each photo session. 

But, my business naturally grew into more and I decided that I’m going to create the same atmosphere of exploring, connecting and being playful with kids and adults alike. And, sometimes it’s silly - even grown men just go along with my playful direction, but when they see their kids or wife’s face light up, they do too and it’s really fun to witness. That’s when connection happens. 

To me, documenting a families love is not about the perfect pose (but yes I do have a good list in my head) but when they break out of that and play with each other is when you get those genuine looks. It took me a bit to embrace the imperfection. Because we’re not perfect, we don’t always have the ideal family situation, but we all love. That’s what we want to remember.
