What to Wear
I remember the first time my family had professional photos done way before I decided to start my own family photography business. My oldest was 5, I think, and she was so expressive in her clothes; layering with colors and patterns and, it was her. I wore what I liked, and I put everyone else in what they felt good in. Well, it wasn’t the best choice. I think I over did it. Well, my daughter felt confident and it showed so she nailed the assignment…my dress was too form fitting and I couldn’t move around as freely as I wish I could, my son looked cute - barefoot and casual. The photos turned out cute and I loved them, but if I were to do it again… I’d change a few things.
So what to wear for your next professional family photos.
How does it make you feel? First, you look the best when you feel the best so if you feel too dressed up or dressed down, that’s the first step. When you look at your garment, how does it make you feel, emotionally.
Colors: Neutral colors are always a little more pleasing to the eye, but a pop of color looks great too if one person in the family wears it.
Matchy? I’m not a fan of everyone being too matched up - looks more like private school photos then a family with differently personalities, but in the same color scheme or complementary colors look nice.
Socks (in-home sessions): This is one area that can go either way, kids look adorable with bare legs / feet, and pending how comfortable parents are, barefeet look at ease and at home, but that really is dependent on the adult. Again, feeling your best will bring out the best photos.
Don’ts: I would say stay away from form fitting clothes, they look great when you’re standing straight in a mirror, but when it comes to being photographed in different poses, the clothes can easily punch up or feel snug in certain places and that’s the last thing you want to worry about. Especially for kids, they hate feeling too snug in their clothes, usually.
Do’s: Wear what makes you shine, feel confident and at ease. Mom should pick her outfit first, and have the rest of the family stem from that.
If you’re still undecided, talk with your photographer, I’m sure he or she will help you out.
When preparing for professional family photos, choose outfits that allow everyone to feel their best, avoiding overly form-fitting styles that can cause discomfort during various poses. Opt for neutral colors complemented by a pop of color, rather than matching outfits, to showcase individual personalities. This approach not only enhances the overall aesthetic but also promotes a more relaxed atmosphere for everyone involved. #FamilyPhotography #ComfortInStyle #ColorTheory #FashionTips #EmotionalWellbeing
